A ceremony at Kelvin Grove School on Saturday, November 28th, saw local Greenpeace members join forces with Cllr Alex Feakes, Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Lewisham West & Penge, to plant an apple tree and 'twin' Forest Hill with the threatened village.

Local campaigners from Lewisham called for the Victoria to Bellingham train service to be re-instated yesterday at a special meeting to discuss the future of rail provision in south London.

Cllr Pete Pattisson, Cllr Alex Feakes and Tamora Langley submitted a petition of over 350 signatures from local residents demanding an end to the dire rail provision in Lewisham. The petition called for the proposed Victoria to Bellingham line to be re-instated after it was secretly cut by Transport for London. The service had been planned to mitigate the loss of the South London Line, but was scrapped without any public consultation.

The Labour Minister who will take the final decision on Crystal Palace park has announced that he will not announce his decision until 20 May 2010, local Lib Dem councillors have learned. The next general election must be held by 6 June 2010.

Unemployment doubles in Bromley; Crystal Palace and Penge worst hit wards

Official unemployment figures show that more than twice as many residents are out of work than a year ago: the rate has jumped from 1.6% to 3.4%, meaning that thousands more local people are unemployed. However, the figures are far higher in Crystal Palace and Penge, which continue to be among the poorest in the borough.

Home-flipping MPs should pay back money - Clegg

Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg has demanded that MPs who "flipped" homes or avoided capital gains tax pay back the money and be punished. Both practices were heavily criticised during the expenses scandal but have not been addressed by the parliamentary inquiry.

Forest Hill Lib Dem Councillor Alex Feakes has challenged Labour administration in Lewisham over its record on Council Tax after figures released by the Department for Communities and Local Government showed the borough's Council Tax has risen at the quickest rate since the tax was introduced to become the highest in inner London in 2009-2010.

Cuts to train services opposed by petitioners

Cllr Alex Feakes was delighted to be asked to present to Lewisham Council a petition on behalf of residents of Honor Oak, Sydenham, Forest Hill and elsewhere campaigning against cuts to rail services on the line threatened by Southern Railway. The on-line petition was organised by the Forest Hill Society on behalf of other local civic groups and by the time of the presentation had reached over 700 signatures.

New opinion poll puts Lib Dems into second place

An Ipsos Mori survey released today puts the Tories on 36%, Labour on 24% and the Liberal Democrats on 25%.That compares with last month's results which had the Tories 43%, Labour 26% and the Liberal Democrats 17%.

Local charities hit by donations drop

Volunteering groups, charities and trusts have been hit by a drop-off in donations this year, according to research by the Charities Aid Foundation and National Council for Voluntary Organisations, potentially leaving local groups short of funds just when the recession has increased their workload. In addition, the CAF/NCVO figures show that the average donation has dropped as a result fewer large donations by professionals and the better-off, whilst giving by the less well-off has held up.
